Sunset at Hemingford Meadows tonight
We revel in the bliss
of a cloudlessly hot East Anglian day.
All around, milli-second by milli-second,
flowers burgeon into bloom
and chlorophyll creeps along leafy veins
to paint the garden in a thousand greens.
Moments to reflect
on the distance between us and the sun,
the protective magnetosphere,
the generous atmosphere,
the benign tilt of the earth
and a myriad of other factors
that make for the glory
of these special hours.
Or to relax,
enjoy the perfumes, the colours,
the gentle murmur of pollen harvesters:
watch a minute spider
dance with its shadow
on either side
of a translucent fig-leaf -
and give thanks!
