Having written several hymns that have
woven together the themes of science and faith, it has felt a good idea to
explore whether this idea can be widened: for example, by writing some similarly
themed songs that can be easily used with children and be faithful to both
science (as we currently understand it) and the Christian faith. Here’s the
first attempt which can be sung to the very well known carol tune ‘The Holly
and The Ivy’. I would suggest using the chorus, as described, as a closing
chorus only so the song then moves sequentially from Creation to Salvation to ‘Last
Things’.
I very much hope this can be helpful to
Teachers and others working with children to encourage the sense that science
and faith are twin aspects of the same exciting exploration.
I’m Making Friends with Science (Tune: The Holly and The Ivy)
I’m making friends with science
To help me understand
God’s action in our universe,
From when it first began.
It started out from nothing,
Then particles appeared
Which formed as stars and galaxies
Through many million years.
Around our star formed planets,
Of which the earth was one:
And when the time was truly ripe
Some forms of life begun.
Through wondrous evolution,
There came the human race
With brains to make good sense of this
And understand God’s Grace.
How that the great Creator
Intended us for peace:
So when we trapped ourselves in sin
Christ’s love brought our release.
Closing Chorus
O the rising of
the sun,
And the phases
of the moon
Are part of God’s
great universe;
Whose Son will come back soon.
