Helped by science, we’ve reduced the dangerous ozone hole;
countries with good foresight, are turning down their coal;
there are otters, fish and wildfowl in
rivers once deemed dead;
we’re more concerned when species’ lives
hang dangling on a thread.
So with some careful measures and a will to
rearrange,
we can stop the planet heading for a dangerous
climate change;
and each of us can contribute by thinking
day-by-day
of switching off, recycling waste and
throwing less away.
There were three motivators for this poem. First, in discussing our attitudes towards Food Waste, in a group we run called 'Living With Integrity', it was recognised that it needed positive rather than negative messages to encourage people to think about the issue eg talk about being Food Wise rather than Food waste. This is an broadening of that idea.
The same theme was taken up at a much wider national level by the outgoing chair of the `environment Agency.
And third, as a Christian, along with many of our friends we recognise we have a stewardship role to play in trying to da all we can to extend the life of the planet.
My personal 'favourite' energy saving device is a steamer: something most families in the west could have in their kitchens with significant effect: three (or more) vegetables cooked on one heat source.
