They came
to a nation dulled of its
sense of God;
to a nation whose churches
had died from their introspection
and middleaucratisation.
They came with nothing:
no wealth, no power, no
slick publicity machine.
nothing but their
powerlessness
and their fervent joy at the
Good News they brought:
their belief that a man on a
Cross had transformed their lives,
reaching out to them
in their oppressed and
otherwise hope-less
day-to-day existence.
They brought no intellectual
theology,
but a straight-forward
story-telling,
which had settled deep in
the hearts
of even those among them
who had been liars, cheats,
drunkards, thieves and worse.
They came and a spark was
quickly fanned into a flame
which swept this desperate
nation,
contorted by its
comprehensive lust for power and comfort,
wealth and fame.
They once more
revolutionised a sick and sad society
by their amazing witness
to the love of
Jesus Christ, Son of God,
Saviour,
preached by those who had
been dismissed as
"From the Third
World".
