Hobthrush Island, off Lindisfarne
Where will you find silence?Today, we in the West are so beset by noise, that many of us find it difficult to embrace silence - and yet it can be true balm to the soul. This poem is written, hoping to encourage readers to think about taking time out at home, finding a church close to the workplace to enjoy the peace of the building or going further, the possibility of making a Retreat - even just a short one - to explore the realm of silence and let it reach into you and speak to your relationship with your God. Or, perhaps for some, even to begin a relationship with God. May you be filled with the courage for exploration as you read!
I am about to escape into silence,
to be released briefly from
this clamorous world
that seeks to suffocate
the bliss of the absence of noise.
Will you, my God,
meet me in the stillness?
Will you be there, waiting,
simply to allow me to be,
Will You use the mantle of silence
to draw me,
to open me
to past, present and future
in the way you alone are able?
Help me yield my whole being.
That, in the deep vault of stillness,
You can gather it to yourself
and weave it seamlessly
into the warp and weft of eternity
