Lindisfarne guidepoles
A narrow passage once greeted pilgrims
who had risked being caught by a tide,
to find peace and healing
on this thin and holy isle.
Now a car park name,
where thousands begin a brief walk
to castle first,
then possibly to priory;
for it is the militaristic
symbol of might
that attracts, above the holy,
reflecting the combative capitalism
of today.
Yet the poles still stand,
to guide those
who would tread
a similar path
to Aidan, Cuthbert,
and their monks.
Maybe in those poles
lies the true hope
for a world Criss-crossed
by maniacal motorways.
