Rhino horn poaching threatens the whole
species according to a recent article in New Scientist which can be accessed
below
Rhino horn is, in fact, principally Keratin
which is a key component of toenails, fingernails and human hair. Traditionally
used in Chinese/ Asian medicine as a cure for fevers or convulsions, its
effectiveness is not supported by evidence-based medical research and it has
now been removed from the Chinese Medicine Pharmacopeia.
So here’s a short rhyme which makes that
point. If an ecologically minded
pop group took the words, gave them a strong beat and a catchy tune and posted
it on the web, who knows, it could prove a way of helping to reduce the market…
then, of course, someone might like to translate it for the Chinese pop world! As I’ve no links into pop culture, if any
reader who has would pass it on or tweet it, that would be great.
SAY 'NO' TO THE HORN OF RHINOS
for you might as well chew your toenails
or swallow your hair as a cure
than pay through the nose
for a black-market dose
of rhino-horn -
pointless for sure.
This image horrendously makes the point: it comes from the Pro Track Anti-poaching Unit, South Africa via 'Wildlife Extra'.
