Yesterday I was preparing an All-Age service with Sunday's Lectionary theme of James and John asking to sit at the left and right hand of Jesus - and Jesus' sharp rejoinder that the disciples and, therefore, all Christians are called not to greatness, but to servanthood. I wanted a song that was lively, with lots of repeats for the younger ones and which would be easily recognised by many of the rest of our fellowship. It was a good opportunity to build on Fred Kahn's splendid idea of 'redeeming' 'The Drunken Sailor' in his song 'We have a King who Rides on a Donkey' (a song I've felt sad gets confined to use on Palm Sunday). So here's a version that catches up the theme of servanthood in a more general worship song.
It is also an opportunity to start a new section to the blog: All-age ideas and worship songs which will soon feature in the index in the right-hand column.
We have a Lord who loves us dearly
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
Earl-y in the morning.
Jesus our King and servant,
Jesus our King and servant,
Jesus our King and servant,
Wants us to be like him.
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
Right throughout the daytime
Jesus our King and servant,
Jesus our King and servant,
Jesus our King and servant,
Wants us to be like him
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
We have a Lord who loves us dearly,
Morning, noon and night-time
Jesus, our great Redeemer,
Jesus, our great Redeemer,
Jesus, our great Redeemer,
