The cinquefoil, a prime knot (one which can’t be built from smaller knots) is, in today’s image, set into a starry background as if it were a series of gaseous filaments in space. The idea was conceived by the news of an experiment at the other ‘end’ of the material scale - that scientists at the University of Edinburgh have woven 160 atoms into a single molecule in the shape of the cinquefoil.
