In a Garden of Herbs
In a garden of herbs
grows a Godly profusion:
drifting perfumes that relax,
sweet and savoury flavourings
and simple natural cures.
Varied subtle fragrances
mingle to rejoice the heart,
arouse a sense of peacefulness,
and awaken the soul
to the Creator’s goodness,
which, amidst this exquisite abundance,
seems assured.
The aromas are timeless,
they enfold you and absorb
your busy fretfulness:
anxieties and fearfulness
can melt away
in fragrances of antiquity.
Saturating the soft air
of balmy mornings,
mints, thymes, lavender and rosemaries
lead a scented ensemble,
which needs our care
to play into eternity.
Surely it was God’s ingenuity
that evolved these myriad
leaves and stems and flowers
to harbour vapour-laden oils
and lock their ongoing secrets
into dry, brittle, beneficial seeds
for posterity.
Therefore, be filled with thanks
for this benevolence, especially
when surrounded by the redolence
of all this exuberant host
that give such soothing restfulness
and serve such myriad needs.
