Before my closed eyes,
a candle flickers
in the evening dusk.
I know
when the flame flares with fresh energy,
and when it fades
to a moment of quiescence.
Suddenly a barely perceptible flicker,
an inexplicable eddy
stimulates the flame,
and the amazing receptors in my eyes
know it flourishes,
even through the curtain of my lids.
In the silence, I sense
I am in the presence of
The Spirit of the God of love,
who in these
sightless, illuminated moments
moves exquisitely and mysteriously.
FOOTNOTE.
This was an experience during a Taize-by-Zoom service.
We were invited to light our candles and to place them if possible so that other participants could see our candle on their screens. We, therefore, placed our candle and saucer on an inverted mug so that it was visible to the inbuilt camera of our laptop. We were using a stubby candle which glowed gently and was right in front of us. Hence the experience of which the poem speaks.
