Wood and Nails

A meditation on three episodes in Jesus’ life - starting with his manger birth ending with his crucifixion and imagining a mid point between the two

A  baby’s hand
waves from a crude-wood  manger.
An exquisite example
of that child’s creative genius:
soft, already marked
uniquely with Davidic fingerprints,
and bending, flexing
with the loveliness of new birth.
In that condition, utterly dependent
on the love and care
of a young, disgraced maiden .

The silky, small fingers
reach out involuntarily;
beautifully ending in
tiny, perfect nails

The second and third stages of this poem - an imagined scene from Jesus’ early working life as a carpenter, and a Crucifixion stage - are now available together with two more Holy Week meditations and an Easter  Day childrens/congregational activity, as a download entitled ‘Rosemary for Remembrance’ from Wild Goose Publications (The Iona Community’s Publishing house) at just £2-20 + VAT. There are several more Christmas themed entries on this blog, including some contemporary Carols - some using well-known tunes others with original music. You will find an index of all these items at  Advent, Christmas, Epiphany Index
