Let the farthest reaches of the Cosmos bless the Lord (Benedicite)

Benedicite: An ancient scriptural Song of Creation  -
so why not one for the twenty-first century
 recognising something of today’s cosmology?

Let the farthest reaches of the Cosmos bless the Lord,
let light and all particles travelling through space bless the Lord,
let dark energy and dark matter bless the Lord,
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let the galaxies spread throughout the universe bless the Lord,
let supernovae and nebulae bless the Lord,
let the multitude of stars and planets bless the Lord,
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let clouds, raindrops and snowflakes bless the Lord,
Let vibrant rainbows bless the Lord,
Let vivid sunrises, sunsets and aurora bless the Lord
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let the oceans and mighty seas bless the Lord,
let leaping whales bless the Lord,
let the fishes that teem in the sea bless the Lord,
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let sun-bathed islands bless the Lord
Let coral reefs and atolls bless the Lord
Let deserts and dry places bless the Lord
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let inland lakes, tumbling waterfalls and great rivers bless the Lord
Let reptiles, amphibians, eels and shelled creatures bless the Lord,
Let dragonflies and waterborne insects bless the Lord
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let the birds of the air bless the Lord,
Let bats, butterflies and moths bless the Lord,
Let six, eight and thousand-legged creatures bless the Lord*,
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let mountains, hills, grassy plains and deserts bless the lord
Let exquisite wild animals bless the Lord
Let tiny mammals of scrub and heath bless the Lord
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let jungles, trees and forests bless the Lord
Let thickets and the plants of the wilderness bless the Lord
Let insects, spiders and tiny parasites bless the Lord
Praise him and glorify him forever

Let everything that lives and moves and has natural being bless the Lord
Let everyone who believes in God bless the Lord
Praise him and glorify him forever

*A fossilised millipede has been found in England with over 1300 legs, hence this 2021 addition to the original text. Its inclusion here is to acknowledge God’s presence in the prehistoric world.
